I first met Jackie Ginther when she came to work in a Health & Safety Coordinator position at a company where I was Director of HR, H&S and Quality Management. Her role was to help me develop a gap analysis and draft the policies, forms and processes the company needed to become COR Certified.
One of the frustrations I had leading the program was explaining in a meaningful and succinct way for employees and management how COR Certification complemented the company’s existing Health and Safety System. As well, how it fit in with OHS, contractor management systems, WCB, and other customer and government compliance programs.
After explaining this to Jackie, she went through the COR manual and synthesized the 11 sections into a bullet point list of the program components that we needed to have in place. Secondly, she reviewed all the COR programs across Canada and created a matrix that explained both verbally and visually their commonalities and differences for all our jurisdictions.
Additionally, she helped me create a one-page visual of how COR fit in with all the regulatory, insurance and compliance programs that framed our company’s H&S system.
These resources became key resources for communicating with and training employees. As well, for updating the Executive and Board on what we had accomplished and what we had left to complete to become COR certified. With the help of Jackie’s efforts the company obtained their certification in 2020, in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
What was most gratifying about the work that Jackie did was tailoring a solution that fit with what I needed given the objectives that were set out for me. She was a true partner to me in serving the organization and it improved the company’s practices significantly. It also enabled me to go on to hire an H&S Manager with the right skills to implement COR and to make other improvements that brought the company to a whole new level of awareness and practice.
